چکیده

One of the early theories in regard to the function of the adrenal gland was that it acted as a detoxifying agent (1, a). While no convindng proof of this hypothesis was presented, many scattered facts have been brought out which show that the adrenals are involved in the reaction of the organism to infection and intoxication, and which suggest that these glands play an important r61e in the protective mechanism of the organism. In severe infections and intoxications pathological changes in the glands occur regularly, varying in intensity from congestion and edema to hemorrhages and foal of necrosis (2, 3) and the characteristic lipoids in the cortex show striking alterations in distribution and amount (4, 5). Chronic infections and intoxications in animals are accompanied by a marked hypertrophy of the cortex (6, 7). These effects of acute and chronic infections and intoxications on the adrenals invite the consideration of the influence of these glands on the resistance to such conditions. In addition to the pathological changes mentioned, the early literature dealing with this relationship of the adrenal confines itself chiefly to three lines of argument: (1, b) the resemblance of the effects of adrenal ablation to a progressive intoxication (1) ; (2) the toxic properties of blood and tissue extracts from adrenalectomized animals, and conversely the protective properties of normal blood in adrenalectomized animals (8, 9, 10) ; and (3) the protection afforded by mixtures of the adrenal gland or its extracts with various toxic agents 01, 12).

The Influence of the Adrenal Glands on Resistance

1. The resistance of rats to bacterial intoxication is greatly decreased after double adrenalectomy. 2. This decreased resistance is dependent upon a functional insufficiency of the adrenal cortex. 3. A dose of killed streptococci or staphylococci can be obtained that is invariably fatal to adrenalectomized rats, before hypertrophy of cortical accessories, but never kills control rats.

Acclimation of adrenalectomized rats to low environmental temperature.

EVERAL authors have interpreted the S adrenal hyperactivity of normal animals exposed to low temperatures (1, 2) and the reduced cold resistance of adrenalectomized animals (3-5), as indications of the importance of the adrenal glands in the acquisition of resistance to low temperatures. However, in studies on acclimation to other types of stressing conditions (6, 7) it has been found that adre...

Relation between Proepileptic Activity of Indomethacin and Adrenal Gland Hormones

The role of inflammation has been shown in the pathogenesis of epilepsy, while glucocorticoids and adrenaline have anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of adrenaline, prednisolone, and indomethacin on caffeine-induced epilepsy (epileptiform activity) in rats and to examine the mechanism of the pro-epileptic effect of indomethacin. The adrenalect...

Effects of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes on Micro-Anatomical Changes of Adrenal Gland in Male Wistar Rats

Background & Aims: Changing the hormonal output of endocrine glands, diabetes leads to the occurrence of secondary metabolic disorders. Neuropathy, on the other hand, is the most common neurological complication of diabetes which affects the neuroendocrine system, in addition to peripheral and autonomic nervous system, contributing to exacerbation of disease severity. In this line, the present ...
